General information

Ballycopeland Windmill
Ballycopeland Windmill, Millisle
Ballycopeland Windmill06

Ballycopeland Windmill is the only remaining working windmill in East Down. It was built in the late 18th or early 19th century and was worked until the First World War when it fell into disrepair. It was gradually restored between 1950 and 1978 to full working order.

A small visitor centre is located inside the Millers house.

Disabled access is not possible within the windmill. This is a group of traditional buildings on a sloping site with changes of level. Wheelchair users can gain access to the exhibition but may find this difficult. Some parts of the complex are inaccessible for wheelchairs.

***Special Access Tours of the Windmill***

Come along to Ballycopeland Windmill for a special access tour of the windmill tower. These tours will last approximately 25 minutes and will be led by a member of the conservation team involved in the recent conservation of the windmill. Tours will commence promptly on time at the tower, please be on site at least 15 minutes prior to your tour time to ensure the tour does not depart without you.

A maximum of six people, including all age groups, are allowed into the tower on each tour. All persons wishing to enter the tower must be booked to gain access.

It is essential to note that the interior of the tower has some very confined spaces, with access to the upper floors by ladder stairs. Therefore the tower tour may not be suitable for those with mobility difficulties or difficulties with confined spaces.
