Wonderland exhibition heads to Belfast gallery

14 October 2008 -

Art lovers may be interested to see a new unique art-science display at the Ormeau Baths Gallery in Belfast.

Wonderland was unveiled by the University of Ulster and is intended to highlight the wastefulness of society.

Created by Professor Tony Ryan of Sheffield University and Professor Helen Storey of the London College of Fashion, with textiles from the University of Ulster's design research centre, the display features disappearing dresses made from dissolving textiles and plastic bottles which dissolve in front of visitors.

Professor Ryan said: “Wonderland is about stimulating the public conscience in visual and dramatic ways and empowering people to dream about alternative ways of consuming.

"People throw away 20 tons of plastics waste in their life. Hopefully, Wonderland will make us think about what we are doing to the earth.”

The gallery will be hosting a series of workshops and discussion concerning the exhibition.

It was previously reported by the Irish Times that the Royal Ulster Academy of Arts is taking over the Titanic Drawing Offices for its annual exhibition, with some of the show's curators suggesting that the venues could house a permanent collection in the future.
