Vikings to invade Antrim

9 June 2009 -

This Saturday (June 13th), holidaymakers seeking historical events in Northern Ireland will be able to see hoards of Vikings invading Antrim Lough Shore Park.

Now in its sixth year, the annual Return of the Vikings boat race will see teams of ten oarsmen competing in replica longboats competing against the clock ahead of a grand finale to determine the final champions.

Kevin Guinchard, visitor servicing officer with Antrim Borough Council, commented that a range of entertainment for all the family will include a funfair, boat trips onboard a pirate ship and 25 craft stalls.

He added: "The Lough Shore Park will be a hive of activity on June 13th and we promise there will be something for everyone. As well as the river race, spectators can enjoy a display of Viking battle tactics and a living history exhibition."

Also at Antrim Lough Shore Park on June 13th, fans of nature in Northern Ireland will be able to learn of the importance to the local ecosystem of the common tern, at an event organised by Antrim Borough Council and supported by the RSPB.
