9 February 2009 -

The University of Ulster's plan to expand its Magee Campus will make a large contribution to the cultural regeneration of the north-west of Ireland, the establishment's vice-chancellor Richard Barnett has said.

Speaking at the launch event in the Foyle Arts Building, Mr Barnett said proposals to create an institute of sustainable technologies and expand creative technologies and animation facilities will have wide-reaching benefits for the whole region.

He added that the university is a central part of local communities and that they and people planning to travel in Northern Ireland will see massive improvements thanks to the new plans.

"Through this development the university is making a major contribution to the economic and cultural regeneration of the north-west, injecting vitality, energy and creativity into [the] region, helping transform it into a dynamic cultural, creative and educational destination," Mr Barnett commented.
