Visitors to looking for historic events in Northern Ireland will be given the chance to play the part of an archaeologist for a day if they go to the Tower Museum in Londonderry, also known as Derry, on June 20th.
The Big Dig is part of a series of archaeological and historical events and festivities to celebrate National Archaeology Days and will allow participants to search for objects and put together detailed examinations of their results.
Margaret Edwards, education officer with the council's heritage and museums service, said the initiative provides a unique chance for participants to explore the city's past.
She added: "The Big Dig programme is an opportunity for people to literally take a hands on approach to discovering and exploring the archaeological heritage of the city. This is a great fun activity for people of all ages and really suitable for families."
Last week, Belfast City Council stated that it will run extra walking tours exploring Belfast's hidden history from July 1st to 8th due to the demand created by the events during June.
