Skate park will 'increase activities in Northern Ireland'

21 July 2009 -

Plans for a new skate park in Londonderry, also known as Derry, will increase the number of available leisure activities in Northern Ireland, officials say.

Proposals for a new facility are currently being considered by the council, but John Fleming, of the Derry Skatepark Association, says construction on the project must begin soon to provide an extra incentive to visit the area, the Derry Journal reports.

He says St. Columbs Park in Londonderry's Waterside is the likeliest site for the facility and the council has already donated £50,000 towards the building process.

"This will give young people an opportunity to channel their energies into something positive, meet people from different backgrounds and enjoy getting involved with skateboarding," Mr Fleming told the publication.

In related news, construction has almost been completed on a new urban sports park in Belfast, which will add to the long list of attractions in Northern Ireland's capital city.ADNFCR-1859-ID-19274307-ADNFCR
