Shopping town undergoes revamp

16 October 2008 -

Shopping favourite Cookstown has been restored to glory thanks to an improvement scheme.

The mid-Ulster town is now ready for an onslaught of Christmas shoppers thanks to a new surface in the centre and the launch of Translink's weekday Town Centre Bus Service, reports the Mid-Ulster Mail.

Over the upcoming weeks the area's local council will be unveiling plans to help promote the town's Christmas shopping events.

Speaking to the local newspaper, councillor Trevor Wilson said he was "delighted" with the town centre's new appearance, adding: "I'd encourage shoppers and visitors to come and experience the town's fantastic retail offer."

He added that the region offers an impressive array of shops, from unique locally-run businesses to famous high street stores.

It was recently reported that people from the Republic of Ireland are splashing their cash north of the border due to the euro's strength against the pound.

The BBC reports that the city of Newry is booming due to the influx of bargain hunters.
