Holidaymakers 'to track wildlife in Northern Ireland'

27 March 2009 -

Nature-loving families travelling to Northern Ireland on March 28th will be able to take part in a range of wildlife activities.

The Watch this Space club will organise animal tracking events at Belfast's Victoria Park in which they will learn how to search for footprints in the mud, holes dug in the ground and bark scraped off trees to find foxes.

Lucille Coates, officer with the Ulster Wildlife Trust, commented that it is possible for those interested in nature in Northern Ireland to see more animals in the park now that spring is here.

"Most of the time, the only evidence we have of these new arrivals is from their tracks or footprints," she added.

"Once our young explorers know what to look for, they'll be able to use their super powers of detection to find out what animals live here."

Earlier this month, the Ulster Wildlife Trust developed the Newry and Mourne Biodiversity Action Plan, which will aim to protect nature in the region.
