Historic Holywood 'preservation plan unveiled'

20 March 2009 -

The historic sites of Holywood in County Down are to be protected for locals and visitors to enjoy, following the release of a design guide for the town.

Environment minister Sammy Wilson unveiled the plan, which will build on the region's status as a national conservation area, during a visit to the municipality's Old School House.

The initiative will seek to preserve features which have evolved from Holywood's birth in the early seventh century as a Christian monastic settlement, to the evolution of the modern town during the 17th century and the region's latter-day development.

"It is extremely important we should highlight and protect our built and historical heritage," said Mr Wilson.

"Conservation areas are an important asset which should be protected and enhanced for the future."

Earlier this week, County Down celebrated St. Patrick's Day with over 50 events in Downpatrick, including a concert of choral and instrumental music and a family evening of music, song, dance and storytelling at Loughinisland GAA Club.
