Belfast 'is a most attractive destination'

12 January 2009 -

The city of Belfast is "a most attractive destination" and would be a worthy choice as a capital of culture, the editor of the Belfast Telegraph has claimed.

Martin Lindsay, writing an opinion piece in the newspaper, believes a UK version of the European title, which culture secretary Andy Burnham recently suggested, would be a good idea and states the capital would be in with a good shout for the award.

Belfast was considered for the 2008 European prize, which was eventually won by Liverpool.

Since then, the city has continued improving and Mr Lindsay claims its "unique heritage" and wealth of "artistic talents", including Sir James Galway and Van Morrison, mean it could host a year-long cultural extravaganza which would be a huge success.

"Belfast is a most attractive destination with much to offer across a wide range of activities," he added.

In related news, travel guide publisher Frommer's recently listed Belfast as one of the top 12 places to visit for a short break.
