Are you up for the challenge?

Sperrintrek 2010 is a series of three walking weekends in the Sperrins Mountains, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. There will be two walks during each weekend, with walkers having the opportunity to choose either a Grade A or Grade B walk on the Saturday.

The first trek of the year takes place on Saturday 30th & Sunday 31st January with 2 challenging walks;

Saturday 30th - Trek 1 - The Slieve Gallion Circuit Walk (Grade A/B)

The walk starts at Lough Fea and follows way markers to the summit area. Group A walkers will be given an opportunity to continue on from here to visit the lower summit to the north-east then retrace their steps and return to the main summit before following the route already taken by B walkers around the mountain and back to the start at Lough Fea.

Sunday 31st - Trek 2 - The Mullaghmore-Glenshane Traverse (Grade A)

The ‘Traverse’ is a reasonably challenging circuit walk commencing at the entrance to Moydamlaght Forest. The first part of the walk is through forest on solid track up as far as the base of the Craig-Na-Shoke cliffs. The route will rise fairly steeply up onto the summit of Mullaghmore, followed by a short descent on to White Mountain summit and Corrick Mountain. The route descends into Glenshane Forest and on to Bohilbreaga’s summit before walkers make their way to Craig-Na-Shoke ending at Moydamlaght Forest.

On Saturday walkers will make their own way to the starting point at Lough Fea Car park on the Cookstown - Draperstown road for 10am.  On Sunday 31st transport will be provided from the Burnavon Arts & Cultural Centre at 9am sharp.

Walkers are reminded to bring their own lunch and refreshments as well as suitable outdoor clothing and walking boots. For more details, maps and online booking log on to www.sperrintrekkers.com.  Alternatively you can contact staff at Cookstown Tourist Information Centre on 028 8676 9949 to book your place.
