This royal castle guarded the entrance to Carlingford Lough in medieval times. It was built in the 13th century and was maintained as an occupied fortress for 350 years. During that time, it was attacked, sacked and repaired several times so that the building you see today is a mixture of 13th - 16th century structures. It was besieged by Edward Bruce in 1316 and used as a garrison for Elizabeth I.
