Downpatrick

Downpatrick is the County Town of Down. It is a cathedral town and a natural centre for touring and exploring this fascinating countryside. Downpatrick is an interesting old town still retaining something of its 18th century atmosphere. There are many historical sites to visit in this town and whatever our interests, whatever the weather, there is always something for you to enjoy in the area. The Saint Patrick Centre situated below Patricius’s reputed burial site has an interactive exhibition and includes an art gallery, craft shop, restaurant, conference facilities, Tourist Information Centre and education programme. Down County Museum is situated on “The Mall” and within the high walls of the former county gaol you can enjoy discovering the past through displays telling the story of Saint Patrick and the human and natural history of the region. The museum occupies the same hill which is crowned by Down Cathedral. The adjacent ancient fort of “dun” gave its name to the town and county of Down. The Downpatrick/Ardglass Railway Station is the perfect place for a family to enjoy an afternoon with a difference. Trains run on selected days throughout the year. There are many ancient ruins to visit in and around the town and Downpatrick will enthral and enrapture you as you embark on a journey through the centuries.
