3rd October 2009 - 17th January 2010

‘Designers and Makers 2009’, a stunning showcase of fine craft and design featuring the work of 45 well-established and up-and-coming talented craftspeople from Ireland and the UK, will be exhibited at the F.E. McWilliam Gallery and Studio in Banbridge from Saturday 3rd October 2009 until Sunday 17th January 2010.

Newly appointed gallery curator, Dr Riann Coulter, said, “The forthcoming exhibition will be a striking contrast to previous exhibitions, which featured the work of two of Ireland’s most critically acclaimed artists, sculptor F.E. McWilliam and painter William Scott. Gallery visitors will be able to browse and buy a unique selection of innovative works created by both well-established and up-and-coming craftspeople.”

“Among the well-established group of craftspeople to have their works featured in the exhibition will be Michael McCrory, Peter Meanley, Karl Harron, Kevin O’Dwyer, Erika Marks and Ann McNulty. Rising stars of the design world, including Rachel McKnight, David Withers, Helen O’Hare and Rachel O’Neill will exhibit alongside the well-established figures.”

“The exhibition will also introduce the public to the interesting work of many emerging designers, including Alison Lowry, Catherine Keenan, Jane Allen, Claire McMahon and Finnish textile artist Heli Miikkulainen-Gilbert.”

“The range and diversity of the work included in this exhibition reveals the versatility and inventiveness of contemporary craft and design. Some of the designers have created works in response to the inspiring surroundings of the gallery and sculpture garden. In addition to showcasing works made out of a multitude of materials such as ceramics, glass, textile, metal and wood the exhibition will feature a range of site-specific installations.”

“Rachel O’Neill’s ‘Bubble Chandelier’, which is made from velcro and feathers, will be a major showpiece. Other exceptional works that fit this category include pieces by glass artist Andrea Spencer, jeweller Sharon Lindsay Ferguson and textile artist Jane Allen. Similarly unique works by Michelle O’Donnell, Aisling Cook and Eleanor Wheeler made from glass and ceramics will be exhibited in the sculpture garden.”

Some of the works being featured in the exhibition may be previewed in advance on the Council website at www.banbridge.gov.uk.

Located on the Newry Road, the F.E. McWilliam Gallery and Studio is currently open Monday to Saturday from 10am to 6pm and Sunday from 1pm to 6pm. From October, the gallery will close daily at 5pm.
